Resilience

Building resiliency in our youth will also lead to more productive coping skills and strategies. Young people will face many life changes, developmental milestones and obstacles. Having the right tools to process and overcome these life circumstances will be highly beneficial towards their overall wellbeing.

Here are some ways to help build resilience:

  1. Learn healthy vs unhealthy coping skills - When a person knows the appropriate ways to cope with challenges, it will decrease the number of negative outcomes and the recovery process to rebuild.

  2. Have Protective Factors - Protective factors are people, and things surrounding you to help keep you safe or guide you to the making better decisions (i.e., Family, Positive social groups, afterschool programs etc.).

  3. Build Problem solving skills - Teach them how to brainstorm and solve their problems effectively in a timely manner.

  4. Stress Management - Stress can and will affect the mind, the body and the spirit of the person. Learning what is stressful, then taking the time to manage that stress can decrease many problems that occur in the young person’s life. Some adults believe that teens, adolescents and children don’t have stress, but they do have it and some depending on their living situations will have more than the average person (i.e., Abusive homes, homelessness, divorce, illness etc.).

  5. Relaxation Techniques - Learning to relax can decrease the levels of stress in the body and mind. To much stress can create mental and physical health problems in the young person. Leading them to physical and emotional disorders (i.e., Depression, Anxiety, Panic, stomach aches, night terrors etc.).

Remember that effective coping skills will help to stabilize resiliency which in turn may reduce the levels of low self-esteem, poor peer relations and negative reactive behaviors.
